That
One Guy
I must admit I was intrigued
by the description of the guy opening for Buckethead this time around.
I made sure I was at the club good and early and all that. And what
awaited my eyes on stage? A contraption that a Home Depot employee would
have wet dreams over. Blue Man Group have PVC monstrosities to make
music with. That one guy went for steel. No wimpy plastic for this guy
nope. I'm not sure how many leads I saw coming out of this thing but
I'm sure he was mic'd up more than most full bands are.
So this one guy comes out and he starts using a bow on the single long
chord on the lower section of pipe.. It's interesting I guess, kinda
slow and more like someone playing a one stringed cello. Not something
I'd put up on stage before someone like Buckethead was about to play.
My first thought was oh god, not another opener like they had for Frank
Black last week. (which trust me was not good). But my initial fears
were discounted, the one guy just started playing this damned thing
like a guy who had been kicked out of BMG for being to metal.
There was once this comedian that observed that people considered Neil
Young a genius because he could play the guitar and the harmonica at
the same time. But the only thing that separated Neil Young from being
a street corner busker freak was if he added cymbals to his knees. That
One Guy one ups them all, skip the cymbals how about mic'ing a cowboy
boot and playing that? I kid you not Hell I got pictures to prove it.
I say top that any street corner musician anywhere or Neil Young for
that matter. All in all it was a very interesting set and honestly I
enjoyed the hell out of it. I was doubly pleased to see That One Guy
play Bucketheads set as well. No need for a bass player when you got
that one guy on stage with you.
