Pinhead at
Texas Metal Fest 08
I've been promising
to make Metal Fest for awhile now, each time it rolls around I end up
having a big paying gig that keeps me from the show or at least until
late in the evening just in time to catch the last band. I think Pinhead
was beginning to think I was doing it on purpose and blowing them off.
So this year I cleared my calender and made sure I knew exactly when
Pinhead was going to take the stage. I was hoping that I might get some
decent shots of them for a change. Usually the light sucks and that
blackface makeup makes it a bitch to get any good shots. Either I blow
out the skin tone trying to make the face distinct from the background
or I get the skin tones fine and the head disappears in the darkness,
leaving maybe the eyes as the only visible part of the head. And disembodied
eyes hovering just looks wrong. This time I got decent enough shots
given the crappy light setup they had during their set.
One addition since last
time I saw these guys was a new guitarist. It was strange seeing Luis
sans guitar and just singing but it worked just fine. Actually better
than fine. The new guy is pretty good and he's got stage presence, they
did good with this lineup addition. I still don't dig the style of music
Pinhead plays but I actually, dare I say, enjoyed this set? Or as I
said to the guys after the show, "you didn't suck as bad as you
usually do" which translates into "good show". I'm still
not into the style but I think they've come a long way in the last year
or so. Next time I see em I gotta get more of the bass and drums. Drummers
are usually hard to get clear shots of thanks to all the crap in front
of them, so it always looks like we are ignoring them. I guess we are
but not cause we think they are non photogenic just that they hide too
well.

of this show than I usually do of a band on this site but the guys in
the band are friends of mine and I've been promising more concert shots
of them for awhile so bear with me on the size of this gallery.
