Hank III
w/Bob Wayne opening
Last time Hank III had
rolled through town I was not able to shoot him, much to my regret,
especially after everyone told me what a great show I'd missed. I almost
had to miss this one since I had to be in Laredo the next morning and
that's 6 hours away. Who needs sleep though, right?
Bob Wayne and the Outlaw Carnies opened up and as it turned out three
fifths of Bob Waynes band is Hank III band members. The only ones who
aren't are Bob Wayne himself and the drummer. I liked Bob Wayne for
some reason. The songs were fun the stories told were just wrong, I
laughed and then I bought his two CDs. Gotta support the musicians who
aren't selling out and aren't even looking for a record deal. Matter
of fact he's so independent they burn their own CDs on a laptop and
print their own covers. Very low budget setup. On the other hand hell
I don't care about fancy packages, I want the product to be good.
Next up was Hank III
and lo and behold out comes the same band. I was confused at first but
ultimately it was cool since his band is, uhm shall we say, interesting
subjects to shoot. Now while I'm not a huge country fan I can say I
like real country and especially the outlaw variety pretty well. To
me it was as if Hank Williams had flipped off the Grand Ol Opry back
in the 50's and went ahead and just invented "outlaw country"
instead. Hank III sounds a lot more like Sr. than Jr. to me. Looks more
like him to.
Then later he switches
gears and it's thrash metal time. The older more country aligned crowd
dissapate and the hardcore fans take over the floor. It's a strange
dichotomy to be sure but somehow it all seems to work. Hellbilly is
what they call it, and I can't agree more. Good stuff, I think everyone
owes it to themselves to catch these guys. It's a hell of a lot more
real than 99% of the stuff coming out of Nashville that's for sure.
